Unique breeds - part one

With an old Lab at home, this doggyvibe owner often thinks about one day bringing home another faithful companion. At the dog park, strolling the streets, I'm always checking out dogs, wondering about different breeds, particularly the unique ones. That's when I thought it would be interesting to share the vibe on the rather unique dog breeds of the world. This month, it's all about the Italian Water Dog.

Lagotto Romagnolo

In North America, the intelligent Lagotto Romagnolo is a rare breed that originated in the Romagna sub-region of Italy. According to the Lagotto Club of Canada, they were originally used to find ducks in the wetlands and chase them into the peasants' nests. Later on, they were used for truffle hunting. Today, they are a great companion for an active family.

Lagotto Romagnolos are medium-small in size, weighing between 30 and 35 pounds. They have a happy and bright demeanour. Their thick and curly coat is hair instead of fur, which makes them low shedding, and might be a good choice for people with allergies. Speaking of their hair, they only require casual trims as they are naturally rustic looking.

Like most dogs, they are energetic and require mental and physical exercise. They love the water and like to play games like hide and seek. Keep them happy, healthy, and well-loved, and they can easily live a long life - about 16 years.

More information on this breed can be found online at www.lagottous.com and www.lagottoca.com.
